E/ISPs That Impact Our Group Performance
In this document ISP shall refer to either ESP or ISP
ESP=Email Service Provider - ISP=Internet Service Provider
This data has been compiled by receiving input from members of our Email groups, and by monitoring our Email server. ISPs that have been responsive when problems are noted, and fix the problem (also key), are not listed here. Customer Service is our primary concern and we expect nothing less from others. If they show prompt and effective response, they will not appear in this list. To see when the addition was last modified, each entry has a time and date (for the technically minded, you'll notice many have a date of Apr 7, which is when I completely rewrote this page using CGI, mostly Bash scripting with some Perl and Ruby).

Connections timing out are very common, as are Host Name lookup failures, which are also the most transient. If your domain has this problem very much, it may be caused by a DNS (Domain Name Server) issue. That can be caused by a free DNS server, such as GraniteCanyon.com (now OpenDNS.com), which seems to have problems several times a year (we used them early on, and they served us well). It could be something just as simple, but whatever the cause, it still results in you having email delivered hours, or even days late, or in some cases not at all.

Sometime I may test these servers by verifying which mail transport agent (MTA) is being used (Ie: Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, Exchange, etc.). I have my suspicians that most problems are caused by poorly configured or poorly managed email server appliances. This is easily discovered by doing this command: telnet mailserver.com 25 and then noting the response. Mine tells me this: '220 mail.ourldsfamily.com ESMTP Sendmail n.nn.n' which means at this writing, it was running the n.nn.n version of the Sendmail MTA, which I use on an RPM-based Linux server (it's been on Redhat and Fedora and will be moving to CentOS next upgrade, again this is for the geeks out there).

1 1and1.com (0) - calls themselves the world's largest hosting service. "What does that have to do with us?" I say? Well, there are some of our subscribers who use them. They may not know they use them, because as a large hosting company, they also host email servers for small, medium and large businesses who host their entire operation on 1and1 servers.

They are so large that they have become very hard to work with, or more specifically, get help from, especially if you are not one of their customers. They blacklist IP addresses, which they are now doing to ours, and there's no recourse for us to unlist ourselves. They offer no contact method other than email, and if email is blocked, tough luck...

To read about this, visit this blog (see the Update at the bottom about his solution, which isn't available to me) 1and1-Refuses-email

Like PSMTP.com, they have earned my disdain. For example, today (7.14.09), they have caused a backlog of over 150 emails waiting for delivery. AND, the saga continues. They continually have failed deliveries and it seems it will never stop. Maybe it's just us. If you own a small domain, and your email isn't coming through, find out if your email is handled by 1and1.com. You can do this by visiting http://networksolutions.com/whois/ (more information) or http://www.internic.net/whois.html (simpler, but less information). Enter your domain name in the box provided. If the NS or MX pointers show 1and1.com or schlund.nnn, you're going to have problems.

As in other cases like this, I strongly recommend you get a personal/private email address that doesn't use 1and1.com (or PSMTP.com). Some of those services include gmail.com, netscape.net, aol.com (same as aim.com), hotmail.com, yahoo.com, etc... OR, and this would be better for everyone going forward, If You Are A 1and1 customer, Please contact 1and1 and have them remove ourldsfamily.com from their blacklists.

So, a word to the wise who aren't already using them, if you see this logo, RUN!

Update: All domains that use this have been unsubscribed from our email server and when new domain clients subscribe, they are notified of this page, and then unsubscribed after a few days if they don't respond. Problem solved? No, just deferred...

2 ACSAlaska.net (1) - This ISP doesn't really know how to setup and maintain an email server. They consistently have emails bounce with messages which mean the email server has been misconfigured. They work and then they are down; over and over...
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
3 AOL.com (461) - Tied for last place for connection, speed and customer support (see MSN.com). NEW as of 2.1.2006. AOL is EVIL. There, it's been said. Not only do they have 'special features' for members to get rid of spam, but if a member clicks on a button accidently, it affects all 250+ subscribers the same way. As of tonight, I'm fighting to get email through at all. And yes, we've applied for 'bulk whitelist' status... Okay, after several days, they put us in the global whitelist database. Let's see how they are now. So far so good, however recently they started placing Ads at the bottom of outbound emails. Some of them are triggering content filters on other ISPs that cause email from AOL to be blocked, thus lost forever. Stupid, stupid, stupid...

4 ATTBI.com (0) - (or any of the AT&T subsidiaries): They have significant issues relating to support and prompt response.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
5 AcessATC.net (0) - Host Name lookup failures are becoming more the rule rather than the exception. This ISP is one to probably stay away from, unless they upgrade their servers. This DNS issue seems not to be going away but rather getting worse.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
6 Adelphia.net (1) - With their financial woes, they've cut staff and support is slow, not to mention frequent service interruptions which can't be solved as quickly because of the staff reductions.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
7 AsteCrew.com (1) - is apparently a small or family owned domain. I'm hoping they, or someone who knows them, will tell them of this listing so they can correct the problem and I can remove them.

Here's the error returning to us from their server:

... while talking to mail.astecrew.com.:
>>> MAIL From: SIZE=1324
<<< 550 This is a submission only port. You must authenticate before sending mail
554 5.0.0 Service unavailable

A submission only port? What do you think our email server is doing, fetching your email? Of course it's trying to 'submit' email to one of your users, that's what MTAs do... Okay, is my sarcasm really necessary?

Last Updated on Jan 17 @ 2010 - Table of Contents
8 BLSD.net (0) - The Bear Lake County School District needs to do their own email. Or if they are, they need to either learn to do it right, or quit doing their own and find a professional hosting company to do it right... The most recent problem is "No route to host" which means they aren't actually on the internet. Except their webpage comes up. Hmmm.... They have so many errors that I wonder if anyone there actually gets most email. If you work for them, get a free email account at gmail or netzero or aol/aim/netscape (all the same place) or who knows where else will be better; pick on, you won't do worse, probably.
Last Updated on Jun 28 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
9 BTInternet.com (0) - This ISP has blocked and deferred email from our groups to the point that I've felt the need to unsubscribe anyone who has an email address on that server. If you are one of the unlucky 'benificiaries' of this action, please get a gmail or hotmail or some other email account. Anything but Rogers.com or Yahoo.com... See Rogers.com
Last Updated on May 19 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
10 BeyondBB.com (6) - Interesting ISP in that they set their server up with errors like: Server too busy, try again later. Pretty lame. Are they too cheap to actually buy bandwidth? Or is it not enough server power? Maybe both?

Update: New Error! Yes! More interesting stuff that shows they may not know what they are doing. Here it is:

Deferred: 451 Error while writing spool file

So this means, either they don't have enough disk space, enough processor power, or enough swap space. Something smells fishy here, don't y'all think?

Last Updated on May 24 @ 11:30 - Table of Contents
11 Bigfoot.com (1) - needs a new server, or servers, if they are clustered already. Recently (see date stamp below) this ISP has started bouncing emails with this message:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<[redacted]@bigfoot.com>
(reason: 554 litemail54.bigfoot.com System load too high, try again later)

Are you kidding me? We have over 6400 subscribers and have never seen that message and we run our system on a tiny box compared to a company such as Bigfoot.com.

I just connected to them via manual ESMTP and got this back (words in this color are the ones I typed):

klp@lehi:~$ telnet bigfoot.com 25

POBOX.com does their email? No, the vendor of their MTA (mail transport agent), qmail, is a personal webpage... How cool is that? On that page it shows how to move from sendmail to qmail. Why would anyone do that? Sendmail is about as solid as a rock. You just about have to have a degree to use it, but if you know it, you will never move off it. I should know, that's what I use on this server.

12 Bresnan.net (22) - Every once in a while, they just refuse to accept emails for valud users. And they don't have any reason. The bounces have this:

then nothing after.
Last Updated on May 19 @ 18:22 - Table of Contents
13 Brigham.net (1) - Their spam filter is so sensitive that it blocks email with reference to white handkerchiefs used for LDS temple dedications where the word lace is included. Huh? Worse, than that, they block emails for who knows what reasons. It seems very arbitrary. It almost appears that they are anti-Mormon and any 'Mormon' sounding word is blocked.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
14 CPDMail.com (0) - Connection time outs on a regular basis make this ISP slow in allowing email delivery. Recently they are so slow that no one on that domain is getting email.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
15 CUHSD.net (2) - They must have put up one of the annoying, and unethical Barracuda Firewalls. Okay the firewall isn't unethical, but the company is. Much of the email attempted at this ISP comes back with this error: host 207.62.90.4[207.62.90.4] said: 550 5.7.1 Message rejected as spam by Content Filtering. Not very helpful, and worthy of being blacklisted, or at least greylisted. Oh, and the emails being blocked aren't even spam at all. Talk about False Positives! (search for the phrase false positives on this wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_techniques_(e-mail))... Oh, and the most annoying thing is, they bounce the email by sending a type of spam referred to as "back scatter" which you can read about on the same page.
Last Updated on Jun 21 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
16 CValley.net (0) - Amazing that an ISP that returns email sent to its custmoers as 'user unknown' can stay in business, but I guess when you are the only show in town, you have that luxury. Too bad if you live in Chariton Valley, Missouri.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
17 CWnet.com (0) - So, you want to do email. Don't use this one. They limit the number of SMTP (simple mail transport protocol) sessions to an abysmally low number. What does that mean? You are likely not to get email in a timely manner, if at all. When an email is sent, they may bounce it with a message that says, "Too many concurrent SMTP connections. Try again later." What if the 'later' is after the sender's email server has given up? Don't you hate it when that happens?

22 Cox.net (280) - This newly created problem from COX is interesting, because in following their instructions, I find we ARE NOT LISTED even though their emails are being returned with the error code.

What am I talking about? Just today (see Last Updated on...) I have started seeing email bounce with the following information:

Error Code:
IPBL100 - Refer to Error Codes section at http://postmaster.cox.net for more information.

AND, there is a form to fill in to check, so I put ourldsfamily.com in the form, clicked on SUBMIT and lo and behold, we are not listed, so why is the email bouncing? No idea. Apparently COX doesn't have a very good handle on their systems...

Last Updated on Nov 6 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
23 DCSD.org (0) - This is apparently on a new spam firewall because many emails are being bounced stating the email "was blocked by our Spam Firewall." There are a lot of attempts to control spam, but it's so annoying and incredibly arrogant and stupid to return all the emails that are blocked for whatever reason the administrator writes into his spam filter's ruleset. NOTE: I've found that the oft-advertised Barracuda Spam Firewall has as its default setting to BackScatter in this manner. I guess that's why most every administrator I know despises Barracuda products.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
24 DSDMail.net (13) - This is apparently on the same new spam firewall as the DCSD.org. Read entry for DCSD.org for a description of that issue. On another note, emails recently (2009) started being returned with User Unknown errors, but the error listed doesn't match: 503 Bad sequence of commands, whatever that means (okay, I know what it means, but I had to dig to find it, and it doesn't apply here).
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
25 DeseretOnline.com (0) - We've only ever had one member with this ISP, but their admins apparently don't know how to configure a mail server. The error that keeps coming back from them is "mail for deseretonline.com loops back to myself" which is a configuration error of their MTA (mail transport agent). They use an indeterminate MTA because the machine almost looks like it's been hijacked by script kiddies.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
26 Digis.net (13) - Recently, they have been postponing almost every email sent to their subscribers from our server with this error:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

              <[redacted]@digis.net>

The reason for the problem:
4.1.0 - Unknown address error 450-'Recipient Rejected: Too many unknown
recipients, please clean up your list'

I'm hoping someone at Digis might fix this. We don't do any type of list that an email server would recognize. Our emails go out as standard, simple emails to individuals, not lists, whatever they mean by that...

Last Updated on May 21 @ 11:55 - Table of Contents
27 DirecWay.com (0) - This ISP has only been a problem a few times, but recently, they must have updated their content filters because now if you put something in the subject line such as 'please read' they will block the email. Hmmm.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
28 EARprocom.com (0) - Host Name lookup failure again... This usually means they are a sub-domain of some type and use a non-static IP address, thus they come and go as their IP address changes and their dynamic DNS server has to catch up.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
29 EBoxMail.net (0) - They seem to be mostly up, but occasionally there are Connection Timed Out errors here. UPDATE: Connection Refused errors are now happening... Maybe they ought to be avoided.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
30 Earthlink.net (48) - I hate to add this one, but they are increasingly bouncing email with 'user unknown' for no apparent reason. Though those that bounce shouldn't and are okay after a day or so, they are missing group emails, and who knows what else.

Update:
This ISP does something that's so irritating that it's amusing. But, for the users on their network, it will eventually lead to them being unsubscribed from email groups such as ours. Therefore, Earthlink doesn't think enough of their customers to fix this, or do they? If they fix it, I'll remove them from this list, probably.

Here it is:

    550 <redacted>@earthlink.net...User account is overquota
    550 5.1.1 <redacted>@earthlink.net... User unknown
So, Earthlink, which is it? Is the user over quota, or are they not your subscriber? You really ought to differentiate. If not, one of them is a lie, thus you are a liar as an organization.

Last Updated on Apr 13 @ 14:08 - Table of Contents
31 EnscoInc.com (0) - Connection refused... Enough said? Well, maybe not. That means email isn't accepted at all. This could mean the email server (MX host) is down, or the MTA (Mail Transport Agent, or the program that waits for and accepts incoming email) died somehow. In any case, email can't be delivered if the host refuses connections.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
32 Excite.com (3) - So where did they go? Okay, they are there, but they keep messing with email. Some server they use named Bluetie just doesn't like connections and keeps resetting them, for hours... If you use Excite and aren't getting email, ask them why Bluetie resets connections all the time, thus refusing email.
Last Updated on Oct 29 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
33 FamilyTreeMail.com (0) - Connection Timed Out errors cause email to be delivered very late. Don't count on time-sensitive email being delivered on time. Update: They are so slow, some email isn't ever delivered.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
34 Fiber.net (6) - So, do you know why email to their clients is bumped fairly often? They refuse delivery for a time, then defer it, then accept it, and it seems to be done with incoherency and randomness.

Just often enough to annoy an administrator like me, but not enough for the users to seem to notice. I guess if you don't get email, you don't notice it's not there, huh?

Knowing what I know, and watching my mail queue, I wouldn't use this ISP. Maybe that's just me, however.

Go figure.

35 Firn.edu (0) - They have connection timeouts when Email is being sent. NOTE: This domain hasn't had problems for a while, so maybe they have solved the issues that brought them to this list.

37 Frontiernet.net (35) - This place has instituted such draconian spam filtering that using them is foolish. A simple click of your mouse can result in the loss of benign email from your brother. Yes, my siblings who use it no longer can get email from me and they aren't even aware of the problem. Use at your own risk. On our email group server, I see many bounced emails daily.
Last Updated on Apr 7 @ 2009 - Table of Contents
38 GTelco.net (3) - So, how can a Telephone company have errors for their email clients that say Host unknown (Name server: barracuda.gtelco.net.: host not found). Oh wait. Barracuda firewall, duh! Worst excuse for an internet appliance ever foisted on the public. Okay, that's IMHO (in my humble opinion). Sorry Gunnison, Utah. (Map)

Okay, in all seriousness, the problem is they have registered a new firewall (the Barracuda mess) and didn't bother to update the DNS setup that would allow this sub-domain to exist on the internet, so when they chose it as an MX server (mail exchange), they forgot to complete the domain by adding barracuda.gtelco.net. It's a simple fix (that will take up to 72 hours after they make the fix, to be replicated throughout the internet), and when it's resolved, I will be able to take this entry out of the list you are reading, probably...

I just checked and the host does appear to resolve, so soon it should start working and bounces will cease.

Update: Currently, Gunnison Telco is now blocking emails from OurLDSFamily.com (us), so all users who subscribe to our groups are not receiving email. Here's the error message:

451 4.4.1 reply: read error from barracuda.gtelco.net.

The problem is, there is no such domain as redir.rhs.mailpolice.com, or even mailpolice.com. I even checked www.mailpolice.com. These are made-up domains. I'm not even sure what to make of this, but in any case, I wouldn't recommend this ISP/ESP to anyone. Of course, being that Gunnison and the surround area is a small community, albeit a cool part of the state of Utah, GTelco is probably the only game in town, well other than using the satellite service offered by Hughes.net.

39 Gmail.com (1673) - Google has started a new email server. So far so good, however I've been seeing more and more 'bounces' where the email can't get through. When I learn more, I'll put it here. More: Several of our group members are reporting that they aren't seeing the email they send to their groups though they see all the other email. This is usually caused by an MTA being configured to not deliver email that appears to have already arrived. It's actually a bug, but some programmers will disagree. At least the ones who don't understand email groups.

40 HTC.net (0) - is a new ISP to me. I visited their website and find them glitzy and pretty, but they use technology not available to all their customers, specifically 'the small screen', such as WAP browsers (mobile devices), but that's not why they are listed here.

They are listed here because they are offenders where Email Backscatter is concerned. If you are unfamiliar with what this is, read the entry for IntermountainHealthCare.org where there's a link to the Wikipedia article on Backscatter.

The specific response in their Backscatter emails looks like this:

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<[redacted]@htc.net>
(reason: 554 Failure Message looks like spam, sorry not wanted here q=428071026)

Isn't that cute? It would be better understood if they used punctuation. It should read:

(reason: 554 Failure. Message looks like spam. Sorry, not wanted here.)

And the q# certainly isn't needed because it's a transient number that changes with every email.

41 Hotmail.com (982) - As part of the MSN network, this is not an ISP, but as an email client, leaves much to be desired because of refused connections and hours of delays. And, like MSN.com, there is often no reason given for the failure to accept email and bounces come back with just "Delivery to the following recipients failed" and then a list of one or more email addresses. With a limit on your inbox of 2MB (megabytes) of storage, you will bounce all the time because it only takes 3 or 4 emails with graphics to fill that little bit of space up. Lately, HOTMAIL has been absolutely abysmal. Stay away, unless you aren't real serious about receiving email. More recently, HOTMail.com recipients are not receiving all their email. There used to be warning about losing space, with a paid upgrade. I've not heard about it for some time, so removed it from this list.

42 ICSofIdaho.com (0) - This server frequently suffers from errors like this: "Deferred: Name server: icsofidaho.com.: host name lookup failure". That means, they don't have very good DNS (domain name service) support. They might be a dynamic I.P. address client of SilverStar.com, or not. But, something is frequently broken around Soda Springs, Idaho... I'm hoping someone there might contact me and let me know they've got it solved so I can remove them permanently from this list.

43 IDA.net (21) - (also called Microserv): Their customer support has been dismal, though their network seems to be reliable for the most part. 47 IVeracity.com (1) - Users with this ISP as their mail server may see problems because their default outbound email address setup uses mail.iveracity.com rather than just iveracity.com. Why is that a problem? Because when email comes to one of our groups, the From: address has to be an exact match with the email address in the group's membership database. If it's not, the email will bounce with an error for a Non-Member Submission. It's an easy fix, however is very frustrating to the group member who doesn't have a clue why she can't email the group.

48 Ikon.com (0) - I kind of feel it's not fair to include a private company in this list because technically they aren't an ISP, but they are an ESP for their employees.

So, since I've had them as a client and know some internal stuff first-hand, decided to include them anyway. They seem to be married to Microsoft, thus their mail servers are pretty flaky. Okay, I'm not bashing Microsoft, per se, but... oh wait, I am bashing Microsoft. They just don't do it right. . . and Ikon is their little boy who wants to be just like Daddy when he grows up. Oh, and for the rest of you, this is one primary reason one of our policies recommends against using your work email for services such as ours (see Our Policy Page and read #24)

53 IntermountainHealthCare.org (0) - is the primary domain, and one of several email hosts for Intermountain Healthcare. Like the others, they have an over-configured (IM[not]HO) Spam Filter. For example, a recent email about an earthquake off the coast of Chile registering 8.8 on the Richter Scale was blacklisted, and the IHC mail servers all sent Backscatter to us ad nauseum. In looking at the problem it appears one of our email group people cannot spell the word assess and instead spelled it with just 3 's'es (the first 3, if you didn't guess already). I know who did it, but I'm not going to point any fingers.

Now I won't go into how annoying their practices are, because of Policy #24 we have against subscribers using their work email addresses. But, I guess I've hinted at how I feel, haven't I? ;-)

56 MCHSI.com (4) - (or Mediacom Online) has setup their email routing software so the email passes through their firewall (IP: 97.64.187.35), and then is accepted by their email server (IP: 97.64.187.45). Okay, it's not really accepted because the email server has been configured wrongfully. Okay, not necessarilly wrong, but short-sightedly (is that a word?). There are frequent errors like this one:
421 4.7.0 dsmdc-mail-mta10-svc.mcomdc.com Error: too many connections from 97.64.187.35
Connection closed by foreign host.

If you use this E/ISP, consider not doing so, unless you have an in with them and can get them to properly configure their mail server to not reject connections willy-nilly because some administrator doesn't know how to increase the number of concurrent connections from their own gateway (lame).

59 Mstar.net (26) - (see MSTAR2.net) Why do they have 2 domains assigned to the same IP address range, both of which work the same? Because they are nuts. In an email group world of secure, member-only posting, having two domains causes more headaches than their users even know about. Some emails come from mstar2.net and some from just mstar.net. Yes, that's nuts. And it means that whichever one the group member thinks they subscribed with, it will be the other one that shows up as the From: address, thus denying delivery of their email to the group.

60 Mstar2.net (3) - Mstar(2) is an interesting animal. I looked into using them at one time, but found they only use Microsoft products. There are several things you can know from any company that is a Microsoft shop: 1, they are going to be more expensive than their competition because it's just more expensive to use Microsoft. 2, there will be unexplainable, thus unsolvable issues from time to time. 3, Their customer support will be what Clark Howard calls "customer-no-service", especially if they follow the Microsoft Support Model, which is best illustrated by the following story:
There once was a helicopter pilot taking businessmen to look at properties in Washington state. A dense cloud cover enveloped them during the flight, and they couldn't determine where they were. The experienced pilot descended until he could see buildings, and flying near one with people behind a large window, wrote on a clipboard in large letters, "Where Are We". A person behind the glass pulled a whiteboard up and wrote, "In A Helicopter". The pilot said, "Oh good. Now I know where we are". His amazed passengers asked, "How on earth?" and he replied, "We are above the Microsoft Campus of buildings. I know that because the response was factually correct, but of no real value."
So there you have it.

61 MyFamily.com (0) - A very inconsistent ISP, this one is. Frequently there are "Connection Refused" errors, which can be indicative of their email server software, or MTA (Mail Transport Agent) being down for whatever reason, and can't accept new email connections.

Some administrators seem to think that email should be controlled, and with the advent of MIME/HTML email, maybe it should, however to do that, they use a governor or some tool that throttles the amount of email that can come in. This can be accomplished with QoS (Quality of Service) technology, but it's easily misapplied by both the vendor and the administrator. When that limit is reached, no new connections can be made. Some servers tell the sending server, "Connection Deferred" and some just drop the connection, which results in Connection Refused. That's a naughty thing to do, and not very nice either. That's the story with MyFamily.com...

63 Netzero.WHO (0) - Netzero is a real pain for email groups. Why? Because they have a servere mental disorder which shows itself as an identity crisis for their users. Did you know that to a machine, NETZERO.NET is NOT the same as NETZERO.COM? Therein lies the source of the pain email group owners feel. Why can't they decide that a .NET domain is for networking hosts, which they actually are, and NOT for the USERS of those networking hosts. All the users should be told they have .COM email addresses, and all outbound email from their users should then be FROM a .COM email address. That would solve all my woes and give the pain an aspirin.

If you are a Netzero user, please figure out how to tell them that, okay?

66 PCLaptops.com (0) - Why do I put this local, but expanding outside of Utah company here? Why oh why oh why?

One reason: To warn the unsuspecting public about crooked business practices.

How do I know? I've had 2 children work for them and both were stellar performers, but both came away with horror stories of how they treat their customers. One incident: They took a laptop in for repair which had a month left on its warranty. They put it on the shelf until the warranty ran out, then charged the unsuspecting and trusting female customer premium prices for repairs.

Another thing to note: They bash the big box stores for selling computers with inferior parts and such. PCLaptops purchases their parts from the same manufacterers, and in some cases, inferior manufacterers, then lie to the customer about the quality.

One of their managers walked into the store he managed one day and said, "I'm going to fire someone this week. Who will it be?" which is patently abusive, illegal and unethical.

Want more? Too bad. That should be enough. But there is more similar things, and that's why I stay away now though I used to be a customer.

Remember, in business, there are 3 major parts necessary to be successful:

  1. Low Price
  2. High Quality
  3. Excellent Support/Service
To be successful, you can only excel in 2 of the 3. PCLaptops has chosen just one, Excellent Support/Service. Oh wait... Uh, nevermind. They do none of the above well enough to stay in business. Time to get rid of them by buying somewhere else.

67 PLMW.com (2) - is a small ISP from Preston, Idaho, the home town of Napolean Dynamite, and my wife's grandparents. A nice place, but this ISP has instituted rules that create a bunch of false negatives. A false negative is an email that is marked as spam/virus, then rejected. The user never gets it.

I see a bunch from them, and as of today (8/17/2010) there is only one subscriber in our groups that uses them. That subscriber is in 3 groups, so on a regular basis, I get bounces from one, two or all 3 of those groups.

Because they are bounced back, I suspect PLMW.com doesn't even know they are tagging good email incorrectly, so blissfully think their rules are working okay.

101 WaLDSFE.org (1) - I hate to say anything bad about a site dedicated to LDS Home Education, especially since we have homeschooled ALL our children from the time they were school-ready (different for each one). The problems we've had are the blocking of email with the specific message in the email header that the email was blocked as being spam, and the only thing in the emails we could see that would cause the blockage was some political items. WALSDFE.org hosts email groups, too, and we have no idea how that is managed, nor do we have any connection to the email groups. The issue we've had is with those who have an email address that ends in @waldsfe.org, which have come back as being refused now and then.

Oh, and a couple funny notes: The first is the first paragraph on the home page. It's laden with the inconsistency of use of the 's' at word's end. Can you trust a service about education that makes simple errors such as this?

The second is a typo on their site, it says What can WALSDFE do for you? and should be WALDSFE I first noticed that on 6.23.2009, but it's still wrong as of this writing. Contrary to popular opinion, I never used LSD, but have noticed, and probably made, that typo all my life, having grown up in the '60s.

104 Yahoo.com (1372) - If you use Yahoo! mail as your main email account, you might not be receiving all your emails. So why might that be? In their 'wisdom' to reduce spam for their subscribers, they seriously greylist almost every email from any given server if there is either a complaint from a user (for any reason, valid or not!) or if they deem that too many emails come from a server. Since we have thousands of subscribers, chances are that when the lists are quite busy, we get greylisted. What's that? It means they 'defer' receipt of all emails for 4 hours (as of now), which means our server is clogged with several thousand outgoing emails for Yahoo subscribers they may never get, of if they do, will be delivered late. Please avoid Yahoo as an email server to subscribe to our lists. You'll save a lot of trouble for youself, and us.

Update: as of today, there are over 28000 emails in the outbound queue on our server. However, I did some research and found this page:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/postmaster/bulkv2.html and I've filled everything in and hopefully they will respond. I did the same thing for AOL years ago (they put the URL similar to the one above in the bounced email. Nice job AOL; Please Yahoo?).

After the queue filled up to over 38,000 outbound emails to Yahoo, I deleted every one of them (sorry Yahoo users), BUT Yahoo finally got my message to the right support folks, and they asked a couple key questions, like how many soft bounces before a group member is unsubscribed (3 day's worth), and how many hard bounces before a group member is unsubscribed (1). Now we have been added to their whitelist, and NO MORE DELAYS!!!

It's Fixed!! What's the difference between a 'soft bounce' and a 'hard bounce' you ask? Over Quota is a soft bounce, and 'user unknown' is a hard bounce. At least that's my definition...
